Time to Fly playing "Working Towards Retirement" at their 10 year anniversary show for their 2002 album "Birth.Work.Death". The show was amazing, so I was only able to bring myself to divert my attention and record one song on my phone.

DIY Electric Acoustic Drum Triggers Tutorial for eDrums
Просмотров 211 тыс.12 лет назад
After much review of the existing tutorials available on RUclips and the web, I've taken elements from many tutorials and a few ideas of my own and combined them into this ten minute tutorial. This took me a day to build, and probably cost me about $40 in materials. Yes, you can find triggers out there for a similar price without any of the work, but I've bought and tested many of those and the...

Playing along with multi-tracks I got from Rock Band 2 rips online, my first video testing out the DTXpress IV. Some of the video takes are a bit off from the audio... Also using Superior Drummer 2.0 with Metal Foundry and a slightly modified Lip Snot preset.

That is some redneck contraption you just built
I have a old Slingerland 18" floor Tom that someone had converted into a Ludwig 18" so now I'm changing it back into Slingerland. I was thinking how on the he k am I going to do this without making a mess of the shell. So I pondered and said I'll plug all the holes then just redrill the original holes back in. Then I saw your video and BOOM there it is. Thanks for helping all of us out 👍🏼
Whats the purpose of the wood and metal and all of that inside the drum?. Why not just put the pick up on the mesh head?. Or right under it?. I am wanting to convert my kit into a e kit
Que horrible!!!
Very good choice to use this aluminium or metallic disc to increase the sensitivity area of the piezo. Great build, simple and clear also you can put and a second piezo glued to the shell and change the input and connectivity to stereo so you can have and a sidestick sound!!
there are a lot of more complicated ways to do this that _look_ high tech and cool. but here in 2022, this 10yo video still seems the simplest way to go
Thanks for your video. Great stuff and well presented.
I got news for you but this is not live audio this is the studio audio 🙄😂
What kind of module best to use? For this kind of trigger?
I did this back in 1989. you have ower worke this,
Would it be worth it to custom cut plugs using the same wood or at least a similar color & wood grain, then orient and glue the plugs to follow the grain pattern? Also would this repair help to maintain the drums natural timbre?
I can believe it's been 8 years since this show. Fuck this was so fun. BWD is one of my favorite albums still.
Great vid. This helps with part of my project. Would you have any ideas how to patch (fill in) drum wrap(in those areas) to closely match the existing drum wrap?
will the wood filler take a stain radically different than the wood shell?
I like this sounds. what yours module
Drums are cool. :D
What module u use ?
really awesome set up, do you have any details on the Cymbals you have seen at the end of your Video?
But what about larger holes, then? Same procedure?
Why would you put the bottom head in place and not leave it open? And is the distance between the foam and the mesh head not to big? Thanks for sharing?
But how do you need to do this
Hey, Steve. You made YT history. Hope all is well. Much love, blessings, and thanks for years of awesome music and wonderful lyrics. ( :
Can you do the same for bass drum tom mount holes?
Have you figured that out? Looking to do the same.
i’ve seen people use liquid fiber glass or epoxy for it since they’re larger holes. Id imagine you plug the holes with tape and can mix in wood dust with fiberglass to match color
if I connect the piezo plug is a stereo female jack? .... then can I connect it to a roland control unit via mono jack-jack cable?
What kind of paint primer/sealer do you recommend after filling the holes? I’m converting a 14”x12” shell into a rope tension field drum and I will need to paint the shell.
I'm not big on paint/sealing drum shells. I think it affects the sound. I am much more into wraps and stains.
thanks a lot for this video and your help. i was wondering how is the “feel” comparing to a cone trigger? since the foam is touch the whole mesh head. does it change on the bounce?
This should be called CONVERTING acoustic drums to electronic. There is no more "acoustics" after doing this.
Hi, great job, can you share some more details on the foam you used? Im going to do same but my foam is very light and soft so i think i must look other option.
If you live in the USA Joan's sells the right foam. Is green high density foam.
I love you Towan. I miss you
such a good band
bro what are you using to get the sounds?
Would've liked to hear a beat my man, but fantastic video.
What about using only bondo?
I'm not sure what kind of effect bondo would have on the overall sound. Probably not much. I just hate working with bondo. ;)
How do you wire a dual zone?
You would have to isolate the sheet metal from the L brackets with rubber washers. Then buy a seperate piezo to attatch directly to the shell, near the rim. You then need a stereo jack that you can install in the air vent hole. Solder one piezo to each side of the stereo jack.
Great video...it helped me out on this afternoon's project. Now I am just left with two post holes (3/4" -1") to fill. I don't have dowels that size handy...would you recommend a similar method or some alternate technique for larger holes?
Yeah, you could definitely use a dowel for something that large. Just make sure to cut it down shallow enough so that you don't have to sand too much of it down after. What did you end up doing?
so triggered
How does having the piece of plywood that large affect the sound?
Geniallll
pie zo
does the stray cats goes with the parts? lol
Do you have any hotspots ? Also, how quiet are the drums ? Are they as quiet as mesh head e-drums ?
I dont know if you're still active on this channel but I have a question for you. I want to use tin cans (the ones you put cookies in and stuff) for snare and my toms. My plan is to take off the lid and use the bottom as the "head" with some mousepad on it. would that work just as well? I really hope you respond
Not sure how well this would work. The mouse pad definitely would dampen some of the vibration from the hit, but it might still be a lot which could cause re-triggering. Also, depending on how you have these mounted, you might experience some cross-talk as well. You'd have to mount the peizo directly onto the underside of the bottom or "head" so that you get some sensitivity. Sounds like a relatively inexpensive experiment, so you should definitely try it out!
SEANTHEPR0DUCER Awesomr, thanks a bunch! And if it isn't sensitive enough, are there any ways to make them more sensitive?
Although, I haven't tried this yet, in theory, this is genius, because it wont have the center head hot spot issues that Roland and pintech, etc have. On the Roland and Pintech, the trigger foam point contacts the center of the mesh drum creating a hot spot and higher velocity in that region. My only question, and I'll know when i build this is, how is the cross talk between the drums? Cross talk is sometimes an issue when you convert acoustic drums to electronic. Electric drums by comparison are mounted on a frame to reduce vibrational crosstalk.
Hi. What module are you using. I've done the conversion but getting loads of cross talk and double triggering on my yamaha DTX502. Tried playing with the various trigger parameters and still have issues. Great video. Thanks
thanks a lot this is pretty helpful, do you know what's the output signal level ?
My cat does this all over the house! Did you happen to find out why??
what i the name of the sensor and do you know if i can find them on ebay or amazon like a complete set????
Saad Betti yes you can buy the piezoelectric sensors in packs. Dont use these alarm buzzers. waste of time. The metal sheet juwt extends the usefulness of the sensor.
and set cymbals?
Why not connect the screws that hold the sheet metal directly to the l-brackets? Seems to me that would eliminate the need for the plywood.
+Jonathan Motes I don't know what's would be different, but in 2 point make sense, first your think is right, but other way like a video , the plywood will get more vibration inside, so if pay attention with good ear , the sound with and without plywood will gets different sound, so in this case, would be try bought ways and choose whats feels better sound vibration.
Hi Sean Thanks for the cool tutorial! Could you maybe please specify which drum module you are using? Thank you very much!
